I went to my first Wasatch Winds Symphonic Band practice last night. It was quite the experience. For someone like me, who hasn't played my instrument of choice since 8Th grade, this experience was like someone learning to drive in a little Podunk town with one stop sign and then moving to somewhere like LA or New York and trying to drive with the millions of other drivers. I lost my spot in the music numerous times, couldn't keep up with fingering. My brain was reading the music but my fingers couldn't keep up with the notes. I play the piano as well and when I practice by myself, I can stop and muddle through a passage of music or work on a couple of measures at a time. With a band, you just keep going. There's no stopping for anyone to go back and pound out the measures they're having problems with. True, it was the first practice of the night and it's pretty normal for a band to muddle through the pieces without stopping to really perfect a few measures.
Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that I really really really need to practice. A LOT. Thankfully they let us take our music home to practice so I will definitely be marking my music and going through it till I can no longer pucker my lips to play my flute.
