Happy 2010

First post of the year and I really have nothing of importance to post. Well, school does start on Wednesday. I'm slightly nervous because I haven't heard anything about my financial aid which, when it comes right down to it, could be bad or good. I'm hoping and praying that it'll come through tomorrow. I mean, in the fall do you accept financial aid for the semester or for whole year that you've applied for financial aid? I just don't know. Oh, and my loan...same question applies. Did I accept the loan for the whole 2009-2010 school year and it comes in 2 payments like it should, or is that it? Is that all the money that I get? If that's all the money I get, I'm pretty much screwed. I don't have $2500 laying around not being used. Heck, I've only had that much money ONCE in my life before a bunch of checks and debits hit the bank.

Breathe, Joyce. Breathe.

Okay...so the Year of the Learner has gotten off to a shaky start. So I'm hoping that 2010 isn't conspiring against me to halt my pursuit of higher education in its tracks. I mean, come on Obama! Give me some money, man!

Okay, really, I'm done. Promise.

I really don't know what I want to learn about. I have photography on the list, so I've started looking for cameras online but everything has gone digital. I can hardly find a 35mm manual film camera anymore because they're all digital. There was this Canon beauty that I fell in love with and guess what? Canon has gone all out digital and has STOPPED making this camera. So now I have to shop Amazon and I'm not quite sold on buying anything used from any website other than textbooks and softly used handbags and purses without seeing and holding whatever I'm interested in buying. My next resource are pawn shops. I'm pretty excited about this resource. A former co-worker and I would go to the pawn shop down the street during our lunch hour and see if they had any good DVDs or anything that interested us.

I've been wanting to learn how to knit but I'm not quite sure how patient I'll be with those knitting needles. I do, however, love crocheting so I'll trying to learn some new patterns and learning HOW to learn the pattern without having to look at the legend to decipher the directions.

On the health and fitness front, I've been looking into buying a couples membership to the Lehi Legacy Center seeing as the American Fork Rec Center is below par in my taste. Plus, the Legacy Center's daily rates are way better than the AF Rec Center and they have WAY better equipment. I'm also way into exercise DVDs just because they're easy to use and I feel bad for not using them when they're staring me right in the face on top of my tv so the chances of me using them all the time is pretty high. Plus, I hate driving in the snow and on the days when it's way too snowy and horrible outside to go to the Legacy Center, the exercise DVDs will come in handy. I'm also sick of having to go to the library to check the DVDs out. Movie rentals at the library are only good for a week and while you can renew them one time while you have them, two weeks isn't enough.

Also, in regards to health, I'm going to be trying new recipes and ways of eating healthy. I'm not totally granola or anything, although I do enjoy fruit more than anything else, I need new and improved ways of cooking more healthy. Granted, having a job first would also help me in fueling my new ways so for now, I've been mostly drinking more water and eating less. Only thing that is holding me up is all this holiday candy that is lying around and it's that special time of the month for me. TMI? I really don't care. So yeah...candy is no bueno right now.

As far as spiritual learning goes, I'm recommitting myself to putting Heavenly Father first in my life. I start out strong and somewhere along the way I lose steam. I need to find some sort of gimmick that works for me. Reading my scriptures in the morning was working for me last semester so I'll have to try that out again and stick to it. Other than praying and scripture study, I'm going to make sure that I actually read the Relief Society lessons. I mean you can only learn so much without reading the lesson. Granted, the lessons are out of the new Gospel Principles manual and are pretty basic, there's nothing better than relearning principles you've learned as a child and renewing your testimony about whatever it is you're learning again.

Also, I want to learn how to cook stuff I don't normally cook. I'm not much of a measure-er when it comes to cooking dinner or any sort of meal but when it comes to baking, I usually stick to the recipe with slight deviations of my own like omitting walnuts or any sort of nut from my cookies or breads and I add lots of spices. My favorites? Cinnamon and nutmeg. I also have a tendency to cut some of the shortening or butter out of my cookies...not by much though. Just enough that I know my heart won't give out when I take a bite of whatever I'm baking. So if you guys have any recipes that you won't mind sharing, I would appreciate it. :) Oh! Added bonus points if it's foreign cuisine. I'm half Mexican, so I've got those recipes down pretty much. More added bonus points if the recipe is Thai or Indian. I love me some Thai and Indian food any day of the week.

Uhm...other than that, I'm really open to suggestions. I need a good biography about some famous or not so famous person that I would benefit from learning about. I may have to peruse the biography section of the library tomorrow.

My mom as tons of recipies on her blog. She also has a bunch of links to other food blogs that could be helpful. You should read the biography about Rosalind Franklin- without her watson and crick wouldn't have discovered DNA'S Structure. She should have been included in recieving the nobel prize too. she was fascinating.

good luck at school, you will do great.

A Healthy Start

So, you know when the beginning of the new year rolls around and you recommit yourself to begin a healthier lifestyle and then you kind of crash and burn somewhere around the end of the month? Yeah...I've been there. Like every year of my my twenties. For some reason, the closer I get to turning 32 - yikes! when did that happen??? - the more I think about where I want my life to go, what I want to do, who I want to be...you get the point. Almost a week ago, I started exercising every day with just one rest day a week. Today - Saturday - is my rest day. It also is my sugar day. Anyhow, last Sunday I was sitting in my room perusing Pinterest. I was coming off a graveyard shift sleep the daylight hours away stint and I was bored. I said to myself, "You should do something healthy today. You've slept all day and have energy to burn." Somehow I ended up on this wall exercise chart thing on a friend's board and I thought, I can do this. It's quiet. I won't wake...

Book Report

So, remember when I told you guys that I was going to start reading autobiographies and biographies and the like? Well, I FINALLY finished this book. I had to renew it because I made the mistake of getting two Harlan Coben books and well, he's one of my most favorite mystery/suspense author's EVER. The Harlan Coben books were of course read in less than a week. I don't know how I did my homework. Good thing a lot of it is online and not due for a while...but still. I need to stop this habit of reading books when I should be doing my homework. Anyhow, The Road to Woodstock was a pretty good read. Lots of history. I don't know if anyone who reads my blog is really into Jimmy Hendrix or anyone from that era, but it was really cool to get an insiders perspective on what went on. The organizing of Woodstock was a pretty big undertaking but in the end, the organizers just let everyone in regardless of if they had purchased a ticket or not. Did you know that? The organizers of...

Done

I am so happy that I'm done moving! Now comes the almost unwelcome task of unpacking. As it would have it, I've moved into a smaller space and I need to throw out a few things. Maybe, once everything is cleaned up, I'll take pictures. My younger brother, the previous tenant of the space, has left the bathroom a complete mess. Thank goodness for Scrubbing Bubbles and some pretty amazing toilet cleaner. It'll probably take a another day or two to get the shower to the point where I won't be afraid to shower in it. Its pretty nasty I tell you. Anyway, I'm running out of things to write about today. I'm not feelin' it...
